26A - Celebrating Failure

This was actually from the last fall semester. I was taking a really hard class and I was not doing well in it. I kept getting really bad grades in the exams. Every time I would study for so long and I would try different ways of studying and nothing helped. I could not really understand the material and I hated the class as I found it very boring. I ended up passing but it was the lowest grade I have ever gotten in a class and it was a really bad experience for me. However, I learned a lot from this experience. Before this class, I was very confused about what I want to do as a career and it was really stressful. After the class, I realized that that was not what I wanted to pursue and not only but I was just simply not interested in it at all. This semester, I decided to take a Criminal Justice class as an elective as I suddenly had a lot of "free credits" and I absolutely loved it. Without going through that "failure" I probably would have never found what I am really passionate about and would still be stuck doing something I hated. It also taught me a lot about myself and how to handle hardships better in the future. I also learned better ways to study and push myself.

I think failure is a natural part of life and it is really sad that many people are embarrassed by their failures. Everyone fails multiple times in their lives regardless of how successful they are. I think over the years I have gotten better at dealing with failure but of course, it is still really hard. A little trick that I sometimes use on myself when I feel bad about my failures is thinking about what I would tell my closest friends if they are feeling that way. Sometimes it is so much easier for us to give really good advice to people around us but when we are put in the same situation we feel clueless. I think this class teaches us that nothing is ever perfect you could always improve yourself and do the same thing more than once and learn and grow from criticism.

  1. Dear Maria,

I think everyone can relate to a time they performed poorly or not as well as they hoped in a class. When I find I am not doing as well in a class, I try to either try to find other helpful resources to study or change the way I study. This is because I find I sometimes need extra help, or it was poor study habits that prevent me from a good grade.

  2. Hi Maria,

Many students can currently relate to not performing their best in their current courses. Switching from an in-class learning environment to a completely online one can definitely have its challenges. Being able to interact with professors and other students helps me understand the material better and not being able to do so has left me struggling in some courses as well. However, I do agree with your point that in order to grow and progress as individuals we need to experience failure. Failure helps shape us into better, stronger, more prepared individuals.

  3. Hey Maria!

I’m sure we can all relate to having some topics that we just don’t get. For me, after copious amounts of studying and trying to relate material to my life there are still some subjects that I just can’t get my head around. Although it was last semester, many people can relate to your problem now. I see that you have already found the light at the end of the tunnel with this problem, though! I think criminology courses are very interesting and if that’s what you like you should follow that! Great job!
